One of the most recognisable, popular and dare we say it, beautiful chronographs ever made. The Omega Speedmaster. Considering our name, it’s no surprise that the Speedy is one of our favourite, in fact the favourite, chronograph at the Chrono Duo’s HQ. The design of the dial is timeless, it is steeped in history (the Moonwatch), and it just works on so many levels. If the Range Rover is the car that you can take to any occasion, anywhere, then the Speedmaster is its horological equivalent. So this particular watch. We tend to like watches that show their age and haven’t been overly refurbished or repolished. So the case, the bezel and the caseback ‘have been around the block’. But isn’t it like owning a new car? You are terrified of that first scratch. Here they are already there, worn almost as a badge of honour. Mind you we wouldn’t recommend wearing such a watch whilst changing the gearbox on your vintage motor….
Likewise the black dial, the triple register layout, unchanged over decades with its stepped contours has some pitting, the lume is discoloured and the hands have lost their lume inserts. But everything works well, the crystal is very clean and the bezel is bright too. The aged JPM leather strap in dark brown complements the vintage look of that dial. It has been checked over by our watchmaker (and as usual comes guaranteed anyway) and the chronograph works well, timekeeping is good for a 35 year old. The crown and pushers are in fine fettle and look original. The steel solid caseback engraved ‘Flight-qualified by NASA for all manned space missions’ is correct and in fair condition.
So, it all adds up to a very good, aged example of a truly legendary watch. For any collector, there has to be a place in their collection for a Speedmaster of any age. If you don’t already have one in your collection, this would be a very good starting point from which to add one. If you already have a Speedmaster, why stop at one?!
