Project Description

1960 Rolex Tudor Oyster ‘Big Rose’ £SOLD

Tudor has always been one of the best brands for giving you amazing value for the price.

Whilst many people only look at the brand’s big sister, Rolex, Tudor’s modern line up and vintage timepieces are great watches in their own right. Similarly, Tudor was and is still most well known for its sports/dive watches. Snowflakes, Submariners and Rolex Daytona style ‘big blocks’ hog the Tudor limelight. But….

While most of the attention is paid to these sports models, there are also a number of terrific casual and more formal dress timepieces that cannot be ignored.

Following on from the 1950s Oyster Prince, The ‘Big Rose’ model has become one of the most iconic of Tudor’s vintage pieces. From 1920s and 1930s, Tudor used only their brand name on the dials. However, from 1936, the watchmaker began to use the emblem of the Tudor rose on their dials in much the same way as their parent company, Rolex, used the crown symbol. The Rose emblem was at first a small logo contained within a shield, the ‘Big Rose’ was featured on only a limited number of models.

Based on its serial number 322xxx, this dates the watch to 1960. It is a reference 7934, sized at 34mm, good for a smaller or lady’s wrist.  It features the same Genuine Oyster Case design as its Rolex contemporaries, but is fitted with a manually-wound 17 Jewel movement.

Two elements make this rare Tudor stand out from the crowd:

The lovely “Big Rose” Tudor logo at 12, which lends the watch its nickname, a stunning and intricate applied element which was scaled down in size in subsequent years and models. Our watch also has beautiful spotted patina to its dial. Old age has given the dial an almost eggshell like speckled brown hue. It is finished with raised dart hour markers and dauphine style hands.  It is now hard to find ‘big Rose’ dials with the cross hair also featured on this example.

The dauphine hands are a gunmetal grey and blend well with the original dial. The 34mm case has been polished sometime in the past, but still shows light marks and scratches, in keeping with a watch that is over fifty years old. It is a stainless steel Rolex Oyster case, chamfered bezel, the tops of the lugs with satin finish, screw-down signed Rolex crown and case back.

We have given the watch a new crystal, not least to show off that beautiful dial and its different shades of brown.

The watch has a Tudor calibre 1156 manually wound movement, lever escapement, 17 jewels, mono-metallic compensation balance, 18,000 BPH, Kif shock absorber.

The watch has recently been given a complete overhaul and service by our watchmaker, so it’s running smoothly and should still give years of watch wearing pleasure to a lucky new owner.
