Look at this beautiful Doxa Valjoux 22 “Jumbo”, 18k Gold Chronograph from the late ’40s, early ’50s; it is as close as you can get to be in “as new” condition. Obviously, it is not, it’s over 70 years old, but wow! What a truly stunning and remarkable watch.
Doxa is best known for their early entry into the Dive watch arena with their 200T & 300T models, in the late 60s. However, before they took to the depths, they had a long history of producing quality chronograph watches having been founded in 1889 by Georges Ducommun.
This particular DOXA chronograph is very rare for several reasons. Firstly, the beautiful and original 34mm multi-coloured dial sports the correct version of the logo, i.e., the “D” of “DOXA” is slightly larger than the “OXA” and has unblemished blue and red tachymeter scales. It is in near pristine condition as are the 18k gold “Sword” hands which compliment perfectly.
Secondly, the 18k Gold case is 38 mm in diameter (excluding crown) and is the reason why it is described as a “Jumbo”. Bear in mind most watches of the era were 32 – 34mm, so this would have most certainly made a statement on the wrist.
Fortunately, 38mm’s is a very wearable unisex modern size too, and having a very narrow 18k bezel, the 34mm dial is framed perfectly. The Case is in remarkable condition with sharp edges and minimal scratches, the original crown and pushers are crisp and clean as is the case-back, which still has its vertical brushing present. The inner case-back is signed Doxa SA and marked 18ct.
The watch is running a Doxa branded variant of the world-renowned Valjoux 22 movement, easily equal in quality to Omega’s Cal.321; and let us not forget both Patek and Rolex used Valjoux derived movements in their chronographs which is an indication of their quality if ever there was one. Having been recently serviced, it is also running as it should.
Presented on a new 20mm vintage style Semi-Gloss Brown Leather strap, this Doxa Valjoux 22 “Jumbo” Chronograph has the same gravitas and style today as it did 70 years ago!
