IWC Aquatimer Chronograph “50 Years of Science for Galapagos” (1 of 500) – IW379504
£10500
This IWC Aquatimer Chronograph “50 Years of Science for Galapagos” Limited Edition of 500 – IW379504, dates back to SIHH in 2014 but has never been worn. It still has tags and stickers attached as well as a full set of boxes and papers. A rare find. It is cased in a special matte black rubber coating and, overall it looks cool. With only 500 pieces, this is also a rare piece.
IWC’s Aquatimer range remains one of its most popular contemporary lines. The special edition Aquatimer Chronograph Edition “50 Years Science for Galapagos” (Ref. IW379504), recognised the 50th anniversary of the Charles Darwin Research Station, a scientific institution set up by the Charles Darwin Foundation on the Galapagos Islands.
The watch has an IWC-manufactured movement. It is powered by the venerable 89365 calibre and comes with an attractive black rubber coating. The proportions and symmetry are spot on with a 44mm case and a 12/6 o’clock subdial layout. 300 meters of water resistance will also appeal.
The hands and indices (coated with several layers of Super-LumiNova) of this Aquatimer are a striking luminescent blue. The colour will perhaps remind people of the exotic blue-footed booby found on the Galapagos.
The diver knows immediately which display shows the time of the day and which shows his dive time. The external/internal rotating bezel makes operation easier with diving gloves or cold fingers. The rotation of the bezel is transmitted through a sophisticated sliding clutch system to the interior of the case and the internal rotating bezel.
The cool black finish of the strap dovetails wonderfully with the finish of the watch’s classic black dial, giving it a striking appearance. Besides two chronograph counters at 12 and 6 o’clock, it also features a date display at 3 o’clock.
The movement (with a 68-hour power reserve) displays elapsed minutes in the upper subdial; times of less than a minute are measured by the central stopwatch hand. The second’s hand in the lower sub-dial indicates that the watch is running normally and can be stopped to enable synchronization. The integrated flyback function works by pressing the reset push button to bring the stopwatch hand back to zero and immediately starts timing again: a feature that is ideal for measuring decompression stops. This limited edition also comes with the practical IWC bracelet quick-change system and a highly durable and elegant strap made of black rubber.
A limited-edition IWC in NOS condition. A rare find indeed!
When it was released the price was $15000. So a truly great value watch now.
