Here we have a rare beastie, this is a Jaeger-LeCoultre Master Compressor Diving Pro Geographic, that has been utilized as expected! Yes, it has been used as an actual Dive Watch, just as JLC intended. No desk diving here! Consequently, it is showing general scuffs and light scratches but nothing that detracts from its tool watch credentials. And a TOOL Diving watch, it is… At first, the dial looks very confusing, even though it only has three central hands, but with time, it becomes straightforward to understand. Two white hands tell hours and minutes, with the minute hand prominent and sporting an easy-to-read arrowhead. The third pale blue hand, resting at 4 o’clock is not for telling the time, it is the depth gauge pointer. JLC are very proud of its milestone invention for the “Diving Pro” model, the mechanical depth gauge (depth sensor chamber) capable of measuring depths ranging from 0 to 80 metres; and rightly so. In an era when diving computers frequently indicate the body’s nitrogen count, calculate decompression stages or measure water temperatures, the depth gauge on the Master Diving Pro Geographic constitutes an impressive achievement combining inventiveness and technical genius. It’s unmistakably an instrument intended for professionals. The central section and the dial area, between 7 and 11 o’clock is recessed giving the watch a 3-dimensional aspect. This recessed area houses a 24-hour sub-dial, either reading local time on a 24-hour scale or another time zone of your choosing, by using the lower crown and time-zone indicator between 5 and 7 o’clock. Finally, a date window can be found at 3 o’clock. There is a second’s hand, but it looks almost like an afterthought! It can be seen above the 5 o’clock baton and only a 20-second segment is shown. The double-ended second hand is a novel way to reduce the missed seconds, but I wouldn’t run a military operation using this watch, that’s for sure! The case is chunky and sports its intent on its shoulder. It’s left shoulder to be exact, as this is where the depth gauge mechanism is housed. On the right are two crowns, the top crown adjusts time and date while the lower crown adjusts time zones. The case is complimented with a raised track, uni-directional bezel. All links are present in the bracelet and the hidden clasp does show desk-dive micro-scratches. In its present state, it would fit the Incredible Hulk, so the new owner will almost certainly want to adjust the length of the bracelet. So, overall a great-looking watch which is working as it should. There’s no doubt about it, this is the Diving TOOL watch to beat! |
