Reglex 44mm Divers Watch
Not a lot is known about Reglex. It was a brand mainly sold in France from what we can glean from the interweb. What is for sure though is they made a great looking watch with this Reglex 44mm Divers Watch!
What is unusual for a watch of its age, being manufactured in the late 60’s (we think), is its size. When your average watch was 36mm, this watch must have stood out as its 43mm x 40mm with a thickness at 13mm. It’s “UFO” style case is in good used shape. It’s not been polished, as far as we can tell, so it has the minor dings and dents that have been accumulated over its 50 years of use. Very reminiscent of the Jenny Caribbean 1000 dive watches, for the fraction of the price.
The face is fantastic with its Sunburst Blue background, raised Silver Baton hour and white minute markers. The striking sub-dial at six shows seconds and has a printed Orange and Light Blue surround. The date is displayed at three.
The inner static bezel shows 24 hour markers and the bi-directional outer bezel, printed Black and Orange, has the traditional divers watch sixty minute scale. The Baton hands are Silver with original luminous infill. This, as you can imagine, does not shine very brightly these days, or should I say, nights.
The crown is brighter than the rest of the watch and doesn’t have the same dings and dents, so we think it must have been replaced at some stage. It fits flush with the case as it should; and winds positively.
As with most dive watches of this age, the screw back is engraved with a diver motif and states “Stainless Steel Back” and “Waterproof”, but doesn’t specify a tested depth. As with all vintage watches, we cannot guarantee it’s safe to take it in the water, let alone diving. There are a few heavy scratches around the back of the case, probably caused by people in the past trying to remove the back using the wrong tool. Again, these are not visible when the watch is being worn.
Inside it has a Lorsa hand-wound P751 movement. This calibre is an entry level jewelled movement made by the French company Lorsa (sometimes called MHS or Maison Horlogère de Savoie) based in Annemasse, France. Later the company merged with France Ebauche. It keeps good time, gaining a couple of minutes every few days; well within the expectations of a watch of this age. A service would certainly help, but might outweigh the value of the watch.
Finally, the watch is presented on a 20mm black leather perforated strap with red stitching and red leather backing.
Today, this watch fits right into the current trend of big watches, but with the mystique of being a vintage piece, that nobody else will have seen.
Wear this when you want a story to tell…
